Driver shot and killed in Fife single-car crash, homicide investigation underway

Police investigating a deadly single-car crash in Fife from earlier this week discovered that the driver had been shot and killed while he was behind the wheel.

At around 9:31 p.m. last Tuesday, officers with the Fife Police Department (FPD) responded to a single-car crash near the corner of 70th Ave. E and 20th St. E.

Police were told that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before crashing into several light poles, trees and a fire hydrant.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver unresponsive. Tacoma Fire medics arrived and declared the 23-year-old man dead at the scene.

On Thursday, authorities announced details in their preliminary investigation, which revealed that the victim had been fatally shot before his car lost control and crashed. Authorities believe this was a random and violent attack.

The incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

The victim, identified as Rudolph King III from Milton, was a Pacific Lutheran University graduate and was an active-duty officer in the Army National Guard, according to the FPD.

Detectives are still investigating, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Travis Kenyon at 253-896-8291.
